“The chance to hear real world experiences from real world people on how their adoption of green technologies has gone.

The benefits were huge.”

We’re expanding the successful Totnes Open Eco Homes model across Devon — and we’re looking for local coordinators to help make it happen.

These are small, inspiring local events where people open their homes to share real experience of retrofit, solar, heat pumps and low‑energy living.

Events will take place between mid‑September and mid‑October 2026, with support, resources and promotion provided.

What is Open Eco Homes?

Open Eco Homes events are simple, practical and powerful.

– Insulation and retrofit
– Heat pumps
– Solar panels
– Low-energy living

Visitors can ask questions, see solutions in practice, and gain confidence to take the next step.

We’re looking for:

You might be:
– A Transition Town or Climate Group
– A small group of interested individuals
– Someone already active in retrofit or sustainability locally

You don’t need to be an expert – just organised, enthusiastic, and connected to your local area.

What you’ll do

– Gather a small number of local homes willing to open
– Organise a simple local event
– Help promote it in your area

The events are small and manageable – just a handful of homes is fine.

What you’ll get:

– Guidance and step-by-step resources
– Ongoing support
– A Devon‑wide webpage and mobile‑friendly map of homes
– Publicity and connection to the wider programme

Please note: These roles are unpaid and volunteer led

About the coordinator:

Hi, I’m Robin de Carteret. I’ve been running Transition Town Totnes’ Open Eco Homes event for the last few years, and am now coordinating the expansion of Open Eco Homes across Devon, with support from Devon Climate Emergency and Devon County Council.

My wife and I built our own Passivhaus, which generates more energy than it uses over the course of a year. We love living in it — it’s so lovely to feel cosy even with no heating on and to have a shower knowing all the heat has come from the sun!
